Maleno Family-to-Family Fund: Giving You the Business

Maleno Development began its family to family fund after its involvement in the Extreme Makeover television program taped here in Erie in 2009.

Since then, the fund has helped pay for home repairs and improvements for more than two dozen local families who apply to GECAC.

Company executives say helping families is the reason they began the fund.

Natalie Washburn of Maleno Development said, So it was a perfect fit, knowing that there are so many families in Erie County that needed assistance with roof repairs, furnaces, hot water tanks, leaky basements, running water, kitchens, bathrooms, anything that is needed."

GECAC picks three or four families every year from hundreds of applicants.

Kim McCaslin of GECAC said, "For every 100 applications we receive, about one family is chosen by the Maleno Family-to-Family Fund. So the need is great."

More donations and help from the community would mean even more families would get help to make their homes safer and more secure.

Teresa Fullerton, a 2011 recipient, said, "If I could give a million dollars to the Malenos I would give them a million dollars if I could so they could help people."

"We don't want the 'Extreme Makeover: Home Edition' build to be our first and last charitable project; we are committed to giving back on an ongoing basis."
